I always find it interesting to see how clients can view the same object or problem in such different ways. Particularly when this disagreement in perception can lead to arguments, rifts in the relationship and even hatred for each other.
It’s a bit like asking if the glass below is half full or half empty. There is still the same amount of wine either way, but our perceptions may be different.
During mediations, I don’t interfere in the discussion about the different perceptions. It doesn’t matter who is right. And neither person is wrong. The point, for me, is to keep the conversation going until they can work out how to resolve it.
My friend Michelle came up with her own view on the perception: she didn’t see the glass as half empty OR half full… just that it needed to be refilled!
